Down Home with Tracy & Eloise Schwarz

"Singing or playing is a way of giving your emotions. It brings closeness and sharing when a song you are singing is joined in on by other members of a group. This has obviously been happening to us for years, as songs from Cousin Emmy, Roscoe Holcolmb, The Carter Family, The Stanley Brothers, Cajun friends and many other groups and performers have become OURS, and we could not live without them." - Eloise Schwarz, February, 1978

Vacances Au Maroc

What we have here is the rustic music of the Berbers of the Moroccan highlands. Lots of call and response songs with only two or three notes. Sometimes beautiful and hypnotic, sometimes a little hard to listen to. The more I listen to this one, the more I love it.

Virgo Rising: The Once and Future Woman

"It all began as an idea to put the movement into music, a record produced and engineered, written and sung by women. So we were trying to think up a title for it. The album is sort of a private conciousness-raising session: songs to diaper babies by, songs to rivet or sculpt by, to drink or type or draw up the terms of your divorce by, to shelve books by, to make laws or run for office by, mow the lawn or fix the door by, songs to raise the heart when low, songs of sisterhood."

At the time I found this LP, I had never heard of Malvina Reynolds or any of the other ladies listed in the gatefold. Nowadays, that feels like a sin. Along with Janet Smith, Charley's Aunts, Nancy Raven, & Kit Miller, this album serves up a lot of in your face feminist folk songs just the way I like them.

Track Listing

1. Janet Smith - Freedom Ladie's March
2. Malvina Reynolds - No Hole In My Head
3. Charely's Aunts - Housewives' Lament
4. Janet Smith - Talking Want Ad
5. Nancy Raven - Crazy Ruthie
6. Janet Smith - New Country Rock
7. Charley's Aunts - Union Maid
8. Janet Smith - Mama's Peaches
9. Malvina Reynolds - No Room
10. Kit Miller - There Was An Old Woman Who Swallowed A Lie
11. Charley's Aunts - Cut & Dried
12. Malvina Reynolds - We Don't Need The Men
13. Nancy Raven - Welfare Blues
14. Charley's Aunts - Sister!
